Background

The gendered nature of the demand for mobility has been openly demonstrated by EU Parliament studies [1]. Moreover, the relationship between demand for mobility and the condition of women in the labour market and in the family is known. However, neither transport operators nor administrations consider these differences in mobility behaviours and choices when they organize mobility services and implement policies for urban mobility.

Goal

Mobility of women and for women, towards a mobility charter.

Measure

A workshop was organised in October 2012 to promote the recognition of the gendered nature of mobility through the presentation of the proposal for a Women’s Mobility Charter [2]. A network made up of a consultant company and various associations and research centres created this document [3]. The charter proposes a list of 10 actions and measures to increase women’s safety and security during their daily journeys, such as increases in stops and stations accessibility, improvements in the design of the vehicles, special fares. Moreover, the collection of disaggregated data, a more gendered urban planning, and specific attention to the transport labour market (women in leadership roles and impact of innovative forms of work) are introduced too.

Outcome

So far, some of the actions introduced have effectively entered the mobility offer at the national level (see pink parking, pink passes, taxi fares).
