Overview

  • Location: Paris, France
  • Year: 2020
  • Initiator: L'Oréal Paris, the NGO Hollaback and the Women's Foundation

Background

Stand Up is the result of a partnership between L'Oréal Paris, the NGO Hollaback and the Women's Foundation, which aims to train men and women in the fight against harassment in the streets.

Goal

The objective of the awareness campaign is to educate the general public on how to safely disseminate an act of harassment while it is taking place. This includes the "five Ds", which are recommended behaviours: distraction (from the aggressor), dialogue (with the victim), delegation (by asking for help from people close to the victim), documenting (by filming the act in progress), and directing (attention to the harassment).

Measure

In March 2020, the initiative set up stands inside stations and metro stations in Paris. The activity was then suspended due to the Covid crisis19.

Results

The approach developed by Stand Up is designed to overcome one of the most important obstacles to harassment in public space and transport, namely the feeling of impunity that arises when no one intervenes to stop an act of harassment. Only 20 per cent of women reported receiving help when they were harassed and Stand Up is working to make interventions to stop harassment more frequent so that all genders can feel safe in public.
